Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities Tom Morrison said the apartments were built in the 1950s as temporary housing and were never meant to last as long as they did.
“If we were going to renovate them, the renovation costs would have cost more than building new,” he said.
Red Bud Hill is the last of its generation of apartment buildings north of campus, which included the Evermann, Banta and Nutt apartment buildings. The apartments are currently unoccupied.

The university plans to construct new facilities on the soon-to-be divided IUPUI campus, including a ten-story hub building for the School of Medicine and a two-thousand square foot expansion of its science and engineering labs.
The School of Medicine and other parts of IUPUI will become IU Indianapolis in Fall 2024.
These projects were approved by the Indiana general assembly and follow the IU campus master plans created in 2010.
