MCCSC unveils board redistricting options

Options for school board redistricting the Monroe County Community School Corporation are available to the public now on the corporation’s website.

The board is taking public input on three maps created by the school’s Director of Finance and Logistics, Adam Terwilliger, and will vote on one at its next board meeting on July 25.

The aim of redistricting is to even out the populations in the corporation’s seven districts– bringing them to a population target of 17,383.

Jeff Hauswald, MCCSC’s superintendent, says this was the only common priority for a significant number of people surveyed back in March.

"Likewise, all board members, seven board members, indicated initial support for board redistricting," he said. "The only party with a majority support also was more equal populations by district.

The three plans vary in priorities.

Plan A aims to create compact districts and use major roads.

Plan B uses major roads as much as possible and focuses on including a mix of both urban and more rural areas within a district.

And Plan C keeps precinct boundaries intact, rather than aligning as accurately with census data. This makes for less compact board districts.

MCCSC’s board districts haven’t been updated since 1994.
