Officials looking for funding to connect I-69 over Ohio River

Construction on the new river crossing, a bi-state project, is expected to begin in 2027.
Construction on the new river crossing, a bi-state project, is expected to begin in 2027.

Officials are looking for more funding opportunities to connect I-69 over the Ohio River. The $1.4 billion dollar project links Evansville, Indiana and Henderson, Kentucky.

The bi-state effort includes applying for a federal grant of more than $632 million dollars. Both states are proposing almost $514 million from other funding sources if the grant is approved.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb said in a statement the crossing will extend I-69 from border to border providing another gateway to and from Kentucky.

“This project will have regional, national and international impacts related to connectivity, safety, and economic opportunity on the corridor," he said.

The application is through the Multimodal Discretionary Grant Program – part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

INDOT commissioner Mike Smith said the state is looking for more funding opportunities.

"We thank the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for their continued partnership as we move the project forward," he said.

Awards are expected to be announced by early 2024. Construction could begin in 2027.
