The controversial Bloomington gateway monolith project planned for Miller-Showers Park has again been delayed.

Tuesday, the City’s Board of Public Works postponed voting on a land and sidewalk closure request for the project. It’s the second time the board has done so.

The decision follows public criticism against the project based on its cost and utility.

It is unclear whether the board will consider the item again at its next meeting, scheduled for Oct. 9.

Installation of the 40-foot monolith is expected to cost $1.1 million. The project was greenlit by the city council in 2018 as part of the City’s bicentennial bonds.

Mayor John Hamilton says the monolith is already built, or close to being finished. The project has already gone through the City’s arts commission and parks department.
