Allen says IU won't be rotating quarterbacks going forward

Quarterback Tayven Jackson has started five of Indiana's six games this season.
Quarterback Tayven Jackson has started five of Indiana's six games this season.

IU’s starting quarterback against Rutgers remains up in the air.

What’s certain is the end of the experiment of rotating Tayven Jackson and Brendan Sorsby at the position.

Jackson started Saturday’s 52-7 loss at Michigan and played in four of the 10 series. Sorsby led the offense on six of IU’s possessions.

Head coach Tom Allen said he’ll decide on a starter this week.

“That person will be the guy,” Allen said Monday. “So, I'm not going to rotate back and forth.”

Jackson completed 7 of 13 passes for 52 yards and was intercepted twice, while Sorsby finished 6 of 15 for 44 yards.

Combined, they fell well short of the 224 yards passing per game Indiana was averaging. Granted, it was against the top-ranked defense in the nation.

“Both of them did good things on Saturday; both of them made some mistakes,” Allen said. “But it's about protecting the football. It's about running the offense and being able to be effective with that.”

Allen said he just wants to see some consistency from his two redshirt freshmen.

“Bottom line is we definitely want to be able to have some continuity there,” Allen said. “I know we've obviously had some back and forth with that throughout the course of the season as we have two young guys that we know are trying to grow and develop, and as we figure out what their strengths are as well.

“We just want to see them play consistently and build it around them.”

The Hoosiers soon may have a third option at quarterback in Dexter Williams II. The junior started two games last season before tearing his ACL in the season finale against Purdue.

Allen said Williams is progressing each week.

“He obviously dressed, was ready to be in emergency situation, if need be,” Allen said. “So, yeah, he's getting closer and closer.”

Indiana (2-4) plays host to Rutgers (5-2) on Saturday for Homecoming. The game kicks off at noon on the Big Ten Network.
