Correction: A building at 714 S. Rogers St. is not under consideration for demolition.
The City of Bloomington is one step closer to transforming the former hospital site south of downtown.
Last week, the City’s Redevelopment Commission approved a $353,052 contract with Renascent, Inc., to demolish 10 buildings on the site of the future Hopewell neighborhood.
Hopewell is the name given to the now-demolished Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital, which the City plans to transform into a mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood.
Renascent is the same company that demolished the old hospital.
The following buildings are slated for demolition under the contract:
- 723 W. First St.
- 719 W. First St.
- 709 W. First St.
- 619 W. First St.
- A group of four buildings at 607 W. First St.
- A small ancillary structure between 619 W. First St. and 607 W. First St.
Those nine and possibly a home at 615 First St. will be demolished.
The home at 615 First St. is listed as a “contributing” structure in a 2018 historic properties survey done by Bloomington Restorations Inc., a nonprofit focused on preserving historic buildings in the city.
The Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission must determine whether it will be demolished or receive a historic designation.
It is unclear when demolition may begin, or whether all the buildings will be demolished at the same time.
