Smith Road to be partially closed 90 days for road expansion

INDOT says the intersection will be operational by August and the project will be completed in November.
INDOT says the intersection will be operational by August and the project will be completed in November.

The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to alternately close north and south bound sections of Smith Road where it meets Third Street to upgrade the intersection.

INDOT said traffic congestion and pedestrian access need to be improved at the intersection. It will be installing pedestrian crosswalks, adding left turn lanes and expanding a bike lane on the north leg of Smith Road.

Sections of the road on either side of Third could be closed up to 45 days at different times.

INDOT said the detour for the south approach will follow S.R. 446 to E Moores Pike to Smith Road. The detour for the north approach will follow S.R. 46 to S.R. 45 to Smith Road.

Milestone Contractors is expected to begin work late next month or early March, with utility relocation currently underway.

INDOT says the intersection will be operational by August and the project will be completed in November.

The total estimated cost of the project is slightly under $2.5 million.
