Former Jackson County auditor arrested for theft

Jackson County Jail.
Jackson County Jail.

The former Jackson County auditor is being held on several felony charges of official misconduct and theft. Police arrested 44-year-old Staci Eglen May 24.

About a month ago, state police started investigating allegations of misconduct that occurred when Eglen, who lives in Seymour, was auditor.

Detectives found that Eglen changed two invoices for goods and services and then submitted the them to the Jackson County Treasurer’s Office for reimbursement. State police said Eglen then deposited the checks into her personal bank accounts.

On another occasion, investigators said Eglen received multiple checks from the treasurer’s office that were supposed to be used for business expenses at the trustees office. Police alleged Eglen instead deposited the checks into her personal bank account.

Eglen is accused of taking more than $18,000 from the county through fraud and theft. She was arrested on four counts of official misconduct, four counts of theft, and 2 counts of fraud. All of these are Level 6 Felonies.

Eglen is being held at the Jackson County Jail, pending an initial appearance in the Jackson County Circuit Court.

Eglen resigned from her position as Auditor on May 3, according to the Seymour Tribune. The police release said this was soon after state police started their investigation.
