U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) is criticizing the Secret Service after the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump last weekend.
A gunman fired shots at Trump, who suffered an injury to his right ear. A rally attendee was killed, and two others injured.
The Secret Service killed the shooter, but haven’t released a motive. The gunman was on a rooftop less than 150 yards away. People at the rally tried to warn law enforcement of the shooter before shots were fired.
Young called out the Secret Service for its response in a series of posts on X. He says “the Secret Service’s mission is to protect and it failed. Gathering the facts and providing a clear explanation to the American people is of paramount importance.”
Young called for Biden to remove leaders “who fail to maintain public safety and national security.”
He isn’t the only one in Congress speaking out about the Secret Service’s response.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) posted a video of a group of senators at the Republican National Convention confronting Secret Service director Kim Cheatle. Blackburn said Cheatle “owes the people answers”.
Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ken.) said “new leadership at the Secret Service would be an important step in that direction.”
Biden ordered an independent security review of the attempt. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are also investigating.
Cheatle released a statement and said she would fully participate in the review and any oversight action. She will testify Monday in front of the House Oversight Committee.
