King finishes tied for fourth in 100 breaststroke at Paris Olympics

Former Indiana University swimmer Lilly King came up just shy of a medal in her first appearance in her final Olympic games Monday in Paris.

King finished tied for fourth in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke in 1:05.60, one one hundredth of a second behind bronze medalist Mona McSharry of Ireland. South Africa’s Tatjana Smith captured the gold medal in 1:05.28, followed by China’s Qiating Tang in 1:05.54.

Smith’s winning time was more than a second off King’s world record time of 1:04:13 she set in 2017.

King is competing in her third Olympics. She is still scheduled to compete in the 200-meter breaststroke and the 400-medley relay later this week.

The Evansville-native won gold in the 100 breast and the 400medley relay in 2016 in Rio. In the 2020 Games in Tokyo, she won silver in the 200 breast and the 400 medley relay and bronze in the 100 breast.

King is one of around 20 current and former IU athletes competing in Paris.
