Owen County mining company ordered to pay $110,000 in penalties

A federal court has ordered a mining company in Owen County to pay over $100,000 in unsettled fines related to worker health and safety violations.

Eagle Stone, Inc., which operated Gosport Stone, a crushed limestone mining operation, had violations from 2019 to 2022.

Violations included faulty brakes on vehicles, failure to insulate electrical wiring, and unsafe storage of hazardous chemicals.

Eagle Stone stopped operating around 2022, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.

The government sued Eagle Stone in 2023 for the unpaid penalties with interest. Eagle Stone agreed to a court order requiring it to immediately pay $110,000 to the government.

“When companies disregard safety standards, they must be held accountable,” U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers said in a statement. “This judgment and recovery on behalf of the public demonstrates that the Department of Justice and Department of Labor are committed to ensuring that companies pay fines for endangering workers and do not evade accountability.”
