The Indiana Department of Transportation is warning Hoosiers about a text scam asking for toll road payments.
The texts, which appear to come from INDOT, include warnings of final notices or fines for unpaid tolls.
INDOT said in a press release Monday it never notifies drivers of unpaid tolls through text messaging.
“We urge members of the public to exercise extreme caution before opening suspicious links,” said Natalie Garrett, INDOT strategic communications director. “The best thing to do is delete these messages.”
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center said in its latest annual report that phishing — unsolicited messages pretending to be legitimate — are the most common scam.
Similar text scams have been reported to the FBI since April last year.
Indiana’s toll programs include RiverLink and Indiana Toll Road, both of which have also warned drivers about these fraudulent messages. Drivers can check their account status on each program’s website.
