Monroe County officials are investigating after workers discovered human remains in a wooded area on the north side of Bloomington.

Police said officers responded Wednesday after receiving a report about the discovery of human bones near the 1000 block of West Acuff Road.

“A land-clearing crew was working in the area and located what they believed to be human bones,” a police statement said. “Upon the arrival of officers, it was determined that the bones did indeed appear to be from a human body.”

The statement said the Monroe County coroner contacted a forensic anthropology team, which arrived Thursday to assist with the recovery.

A police investigation is also ongoing, according to the statement.

The Monroe County Coroner’s office didn’t immediately return messages Friday.

In a separate incident last week, police reported that a Bloomington resident discovered a body in a van where he had been storing tools.

An autopsy is pending in that case, a police spokesperson said Friday.
