Indiana University’s annual Little 500 bike race took place on Friday and Saturday. Friday was the women’s 37th race. Women’s teams race 25 miles around a quarter-mile track. The men’s 74th race was Saturday. Men’s teams race 50 miles.
The race brings approximately 25,000 people to town, according to Visit Bloomington’s website.
Hannah M. Cornett, Indiana University Public Safety Public Information Officer, said Indiana University Police responded to 36 reports of criminal activity over the weekend, one less than last year.
She said IUPD “made four outright arrests” — two for battery, one for public intoxication and one for intimidation.
The most common reports to IUPD this weekend were for battery resulting in minor or no injury and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor. She said other additional incidents have been referred to university officials or are still being investigated.
The IUPD dispatch center received 159 calls over the weekend, 29 more than in 2024.
Cornett said in preparation for Little 500 weekend, IUPD increased its presence across the Bloomington campus.
WFIU/WTIU asked the Bloomington Police Department for a breakdown of arrests made, offenses, and calls along with a comparison to previous years.
BPD's public information officer Captain Ryan Pedigo said this information was not immediately available and "will require a request for public information to be submitted to our Records Division...It will be processed with all other requests through our normal procedures."
