Hoosier farmers on pace with planting of staple crops

Indiana farmers have planted just over a quarter of the state’s staple crops so far this season.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 26 percent of Indiana’s corn and 25 percent of its soybeans have been planted as of May 4.

That puts corn planting progress slightly above the five-year average of 25 percent. Indiana’s soybeans are well ahead of the five-year pace of 20 percent.

Throughout the country, corn planting is 40 percent completed, while soybean planting is 30 percent completed.

A wet April has made it difficult for some farmers to get work done in their fields.
