Former Indiana University basketball team physician Dr. Brad Bomba Sr. died May 8 at the age of 89. According to his obituary, he passed in hospice care.
Bomba was born in Chicago on December 15, 1935, and came to Bloomington to play football at IU.
He went on to play for the Washington Redskins in the NFL, then attended the IU School of Medicine. He was later inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame and the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.
Bomba was the physician for the IU men’s basketball team for about 30 years, starting in 1979.
Bomba’s conduct then is the focus of a pending lawsuit filed by five former players. They say Bomba performed unnecessary rectal exams and characterize them as sexual assault under the guise of medical care. They accuse IU of knowing about this and not intervening.

Bomba was not a defendant, but former trainer Tim Garl is named.
A law firm hired by the university concluded that the rectal exams were uncommon, but not inappropriate.
The plaintiff’s lawyer said in a statement that the report confirms IU officials knew about the exams, and didn’t do anything to stop it.
