The Monroe County Board of Health is juggling two issues: finalizing its official public comment policy and the potential removal of a board member.
During Thursday’s board meeting, members discussed the absence of Diane Neal. According to the board, Neal has missed four, non-consecutive meetings, which violates state guidelines. Missing three consecutive meetings would also be grounds for removal.
Aurora DiOrio, president of the county health board, said the Monroe County Board of Commissioners recommended that the board begin the process of removing Neal.
Neal couldn’t be reached for comment.
The county commissioners make the final decision.
The board decided to table the idea until DiOrio gets clarification on the removal process and whether a board recommendation is necessary.
Neal’s term began Jan. 9 and concludes Dec. 31, 2028.

As for the board’s official public comment policy, DiOrio said a final draft will be ready for a vote in August. The current idea is a comment period for items not on the agenda and separate public comment periods for each agenda item, similar to how Bloomington’s city council and the Monroe County Council conduct public meetings.
The health board also invites the public to continue using its newly established email address, which can be found here.
