This week on Afterglow we'll feature the late-1950s Pacific Jazz albums of pianist, arranger, and composer Gil Evans.
Evans is legendary for his late-1950s work with trumpeter Miles Davis (Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain); these lesser-known LPs, recently reissued by Blue Note as one CD (including liner notes by Indiana University's own David Baker), showcase an application of his writing talents to such warhorses as "St. Louis Blues," "King Porter Stomp," and other jazz standards.
Among the soloists joining Evans are alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and trumpeter Johnny Coles.
We'll also hear music from Anita O'Day, Jeri Southern, Warne Marsh, Nat King Cole, Bill Potts, and others.
