Well, inside the lining they're filled with super absorbent crystals made from a chemical mixture called sodium polyacrylate. The crystals absorb liquid like you wouldn't believe. One pound of crystals can absorb over fifty gallons of liquid!
When the crystals soak up liquid they puff up and turn into a kind of gelatin. That's why a wet diaper feels so squishy.
