Texas Horns

Our featured recording this week is a joint project from the horn sections of both the Dallas and Houston Symphonies. "Texas Horns" brings the two groups together for a collection of American compositions, transcriptions and arrangements, featuring a version that's new to me: a brass arrangement of Samuel Barber's most successful composition, Adagio.

Other compositions include Kerry Turner's Bronze Triptych, and Anthony DiLorenzo's ode to the film great film composer Hooked on Williams. And what would a recording from Texans be without a tip of the ten gallon hat, which is provided in James Beckel's "Portraits of the American West."

Our quick pick this week comes from violinist Jonathan Crow and pianist Paul Stewart. The two virtuosi team up in these performances sonatas for violin and piano from Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel and Edward Elgar
