New food detectives will be joining the Food and Drug Administration soon -- and their goal is to catch outbreaks before they start.
The FDA will begin inspecting farms and facilities where produce is grown, packed and washed.
Currently farms like Jensen, the farm traced to the cantaloupe listeria outbreak, are not inspected by the FDA at all. They are only inspected if an outbreak is suspected.
The new laws won't take place immediately -- the FDA is drafting laws over the next two years specific to produce-related bacteria.
The FDA will be tightening their inspections as well with the help of the Association of Food and Drug Officials, or AFDO.
AFDO's role will facilitate communication between the FDA and the USDA to avoid potential outbreaks, and educate those working in food.
