The US Department of Agriculture and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released an update today on their ongoing investigation of Rhode Island-based Daniele International. The CDC reports that they have found more salmonella contamination in salami products produced by Daniele International.
Daniele International will be recalling another 115,000 pounds of salami products, an expansion of a January 23rd recall of around 1.3 million pounds of salami.
Black and Red Pepper To Blame
The previous recalls were due to the discovery of salmonella in black pepper products while the expanded recall concerns a new suspicion of salmonella contamination in the crusted red pepper used to spice Italian sausage products.
Daniele International obtains their spices from Mincing Overseas Spice Company and Wholesome Spice.

As of 9:00 pm EST on February 15, 2010, a total of 230 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Montevideo, which displays either of two closely related PFGE patterns, have been reported from 44 states and District of Columbia since July 1, 2009.
So far, a total of 230 people have been infected with salmonella in 44 states and Washington D.C..
