Puccini: O mio babbino caro

Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1918 as part of a triptych of one-act operas. The entirety of this dark comedy takes place in the bedroom of the deceased Buoso Donati. Relatives have gathered there in hopes of changing his will, as Buoso has left all of his money to a monastery. The crafty peasant Gianni Schicchi is brought in to impersonate the deceased, and revise the will in the presence of a notary. Schicchi uses this opportunity to claim most of Buoso's inheritance for himself. Puccini's collaborator, Giovacchino Forzano developed the libretto from the " Inferno" of Dante's Divine Comedy. It seems that Dante's own relatives were cheated by a real-life Gianni Schicchi.
