International Holidays

When this comic play was translated for an operatic audience, the setting was changed. In the original, the party-goers would have celebrated Christmas Eve by visiting cafés and restaurants that traditionally remained open all night after the midnight mass. When the play was adapted for the Austrian stage, the location was replaced by something more familiar to Viennese audiences, a splendid ball!
