Liszt: Mephisto Waltz

When Liszt accepted the position of Kapellmeister-in-Extraordinary in Weimar in 1842, it was an attractive offer. The relative calm of the city offered him the luxury of time to compose, yet the many cultural offerings of the city that produced Goethe and Schiller were striking. Speaking of his position and love of Weimar , Liszt said he could envision creating an "Athens of the North". Although Liszt produced some of his most well-known works in Weimar, he left disillusioned 13 years later.
