This work featured many controversial and novel ideas, especially the rowdy chorus of women in the first act. Despite its endorsement from a number of prominent composers, this opera wasn't exactly a smash success. But it seems that the praise of Berlioz had the most effect and to show his appreciation, this composer offered to fight a duel with anyone who dared to bad-mouth Berlioz's Les Troyens.
