Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition: Great Gate Of Kiev

Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is subtitled "A remembrance of Viktor Hartmann". Hartmann's artwork and sketches provided the raw material from which Mussorgsky fashioned his music composition. The two were devoted to the cause of Russian art and met in 1870. Hartmann died only three years later, an event that shook Mussorgsky greatly. He composed Pictures after an 1874 exhibition of Hartmann's work.
