The Galileo Project

The concept of “Music of the Spheres” is an ancient one based on the heavenly ensemble of planets and stars  moving through space, making music.

Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, directed by Jeanne Lamon, contributed their project, called The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres to the United Nations International Year of Astronomy, which marked 2009 as the 400 th anniversary of Galileo’s first use of the telescope.

Tafelmusik Media released a DVD and CD of the Galileo Project, conceived and programmed by Alison Mackay, in 2012.  The project uses words, images and instrumental music of the 17 th and 18 th centuries to explore the world in which the astronomers of the time lived and worked.  Music from Galileo’s brother through that of Bach, with Vivaldi, Lully, Purcell, Rameau, Telemann and others paint a picture that celebrates the wonders of the cosmos.
