Here are some highlights from today's interview:
Mayor Goodnight recently announced plans for a new downtown parking and residential facility.
"Here in the next 30 or 40 days we're going to break ground on a new parking garage. It will be four levels of parking and on the fifth floor we'll have about 33 apartments - all with some sort of open space, some will have balcony space, some will have access to an interior courtyard - this is a private development estimate at about $8.5 million for the parking garage and $3.5 million for the housing."
Goodnight says the city is in a good financial position to invest in its downtown.
"We're the only city even close to our size - about 58,000 people - that has zero debt - no TIF debt, no general obligation debt, no EDIT debt. We are going to get a five-year bond for the parking garage but we are in a position where we could realistically pay cash for it."
The City of Kokomo announced plans to contribute $4 million to a new YMCA.
"Our YMCA is located downtown. The original structure is over 100 years old, build when YMCA's had a majority of a housing component to them."
"We partner with not-for-profits all the time. We've done this with a veteran housing project. We do things with the United Way and partner with them from time to time - not obviously at this level. But we believe they're building a quality structure. This will a modern, nice, urban design. It's obviously a part of our redevelopment strategy - redeveloping existing properties to mitigate sprawl. So everything they're doing is a part of our goals and objectives to try to make a more sustainable community."
