Cooperative Living

The United Nations has declared 2012 the "International Year of the Cooperatives," and Bloomington has a growing cooperative movement of its own. Bloomington Cooperative Living, which began in 2007, houses about 36 residents in four houses where everyone shares chores and living costs. Dandelion Village is a movement to build a sustainable ecovillage on the west side of Bloomington where they will have cooperative housing, tend to vegetable gardens and raise livestock.

Members of these organizations say the movement encourages sustainability, but some neighbors are concerned about sanitation, excessive noise and safety issues.
