IU Police Citing Scooter Operators For Traffic Violations

(WFIU/WTIU News)

Indiana University Police say they've pulled over multiple people riding electric scooters for violating traffic laws.

While the City of Bloomington hasn't passed any regulations for the new mode of transportation, people are supposed to ride them on the street.

IU Police say they've pulled people over for not coming to a full stop on the scooters at an intersection, and going the wrong direction down a one-way street.

Capt. Craig Munroe says people on the scooters can face the same penalties as people behind the wheel of a car.

"Obviously there are a lot of these vehicles on the road," Munroe says. "People are learning how to use them. We're learning how to deal with them, too. But if it comes to an infraction of state, then you can receive a ticket or a verbal warning."

People can ride the scooters on trails and on the B-Line in Bloomington.
