After nearly 200 years, the fish that sits on top of the Monroe County Courthouse finally has a name. Residents selected “Hoagy” by popular vote in an online survey.
The contest was part of Monroe County’s bicentennial celebrations.
Andrea Hadsell is the Education Manager for the Monroe County History Center. She says children between the ages of 4 and 14 submitted names.
"We received about 290 entries, some with repeat names and some very unique names," Hadsell says. "It was definitely a tough decision for a lot of people. There were a lot of great options."
Those names were narrowed down to six finalists. County residents voted to select their favorite.
Six-year-old James Quinn Yount submitted the winning name.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this story said the fish's name is 'Hoagy Carmichael.' It has been updated to show the name is simply 'Hoagy.'
