Indiana State Parks Offering First Day Hikes

Indiana's state parks will each offer a different hike on New Year's Day (Steve Burns, WFIU/WTIU News).

Indiana’s state parks are offering guided hikes on New Year’s Day.

The tradition of First Day Hikes started more than 20 years ago at a state park in Massachusetts. The idea is to get people outdoors, and start the year on a healthy note.

Each of Indiana’s state parks will host first day hikes.

At McCormick’s Creek in Spencer, participants will hike from the Canyon Inn to the waterfalls.

Interpretive Naturalist Wyatt Williams says there will also be an optional photo contest.

"Something that’s really nice about it is that it showcases our parks in a different time of year," Williams says. "Everybody thinks that we’re open from Memorial to Labor Day, but when you come out you get to see a different kind of beauty this time of year."

The hike at McCormick's Creek will start at 2 p.m. at the Canyon Inn.

Monroe Lake will host a trail walk and run on New Year’s Day, and Brown County State Park’s hike will take participants across a covered bridge.
