Brown County's 'Maple Leaf' Becomes 'Sundown At Salt Creek' But May Change Again

The Maple Leaf Performing Arts Center board voted to change the venue’s name last week, but now they’re considering changing it again.

The board voted to rename the center "Sundown at Salt Creek."

Executive Director Dana Beth Evans says the name had polled the best in a market survey.

"The marketing organization presented their findings, we didn’t have any negative connotations with the name at all," Evans says. "So the name was voted at our board meeting."

However, Evans started receiving concerned emails from community members after announcing the new name.

“Most of the concerns did divide on a racial background,” Evans says.

Historically, a “sundown town” is a town that excludes non-white individuals through intimidation, local law or violence.

The board said in a statement that the name does not "fit with the image we want to project or who we are."

Evans says the board will vote on a new name at the beginning of March.
