Indiana University football opens the season Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis against Ball State.
Head Coach Tom Allen announced Monday redshirt freshman Mike Penix as the Hoosier’s starting quarterback for the 2019 season. Junior Peyton Ramsey ended up starting all 12 games last season after Penix suffered a season-ending ACL injury against Penn State.
“Those are tough decisions that have to be made by head coaches," Allen says. "And so it wasn't what Peyton didn't do. It was more of what I believe Mike can be. And so just we let these guys compete, and it was very, as we said all along, it was very close.”
Penix also beat out Utah transfer freshman Jack Tuttle.
The Hoosiers are coming off a 5 and 7 record heading into Allen’s third season as head coach. The Ball State Cardinals posted a 4-8 record in 2018. IU leads the all-time series 6-3 with victories in the last two meetings.
Kickoff is scheduled for noon and will be televised on the CBS Sports Network.
