New $70 Million IU School Of Medicine Opening In Evansville

Downtown Evansville will be the home of a new regional campus of the IU School of Medicine.

IU considered locating the new medical school on Evansville‘s Promenade, a site across the county line in Warrick County, and the University of Southern Indiana. US-I is a partner in the project along with Ivy Tech and the University of Evansville.

But IU president Michael McRobbie says the downtown site next to the new Ford Center arena was the overwhelming preference of stakeholders who have been reviewing the proposals over the last three months. He says the location will be within walking distance for students while providing easy access to Evansville‘s hospitals, and places IU in the heart of a rapidly expanding downtown. The location is across the street from Evansville‘s planned new convention center.

IU vice president Thomas Morrison says city and county incentives will cover about half the $70 million cost.

IU‘s trustees approved the location unanimously.

The 170-thousand-square-foot campus will also house programs from IU‘s dental school and health sciences programs of the three collegiate partners.
