Indianapolis Zoo's Orangutan Center Gets New Name

The Indianapolis Zoo's orangutan center, its newest exhibit will be called the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center after Cindy Simon Skjodt has made a $5 million donation to the Campaign for Conservation and Community: Saving the Orangutans.

Skjodt, a philanthropist and daughter of Mel Simon of Simon Property Group, has been a longtime financial supporter of the zoo.

"Orangutans are such magnificent animals, but it's devastating to think they could be gone from this world within a matter of years. We cannot let that happen," Skjodt said in a statement.

The zoo announced the construction of the orangutan center in 2011, which is set to house eight endangered orangutans.

It is scheduled to open to the public May 24.
