Incumbent Representatives Rebecca Kubacki, R-Kosciusko County, and Kathy Heuer, R-Columbia City, both opposed the proposed constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage known as HJR-3 and both lost their seats in Tuesday night's primary.
Kubacki lost to small business owner Curt Nisly.
Nisley told the Elkhart Truth that it was "very unfortunately Kubacki was elected in 2010.
"Our campaign firmly believes constituents in District 22 deserve the right to vote on marriage," Nisly said in a statement Wednesday, Jan. 29. "This decision belongs in the hands of Hoosiers."
Heuer lost to autoworker Christopher Judy.
On his website, Judy takes a strong stance on traditional marriage.
"The family unit is dependent upon the institution of marriage," the site reads. "The history of man has proven that the only functional family is that centered on the traditional bonds between man and woman."
The marriage amendment issue did not have the same kind of impact on its staunch supporters Eric Turner and Milo Smith, who both secured victories.
