New Bloomington Transit Center Opens Today

The new Bloomington Transit Center is up and running – a couple of months behind schedule. General Manager Lewis May says he thinks it was worth the wait for local residents.

"It's a great addition to downtown, but most importantly it's a great addition for Bloomington Transit," May said. "We're really proud of it. It's something I think the public is going to enjoy using."

The new facility on 3rd and Walnut has a larger waiting area than the old building. It's air conditioned, and there are more seats, restrooms, and vending machines. Outside the building are bike racks and benches.

The building's total cost – including land, design, and construction – was about $9.5 million. Most of that came from federal funding and Bloomington Transit.

The second floor is home to a new 911 emergency dispatch center, funded by the City of Bloomington and Monroe County.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 10.
