A pilot program that gave bicyclists weekend rides to and from Chicago aboard the South Shore commuter rail line will continue during 2017.
South Shore President Michael Noland says the program was a success once problems managing the bike rack-equipped passenger cars were worked out.
The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports the weekend program distributed six bike-hauling cars among seven trains in each direction. Those trains provided more than 1,000 rides to bikers to and from South Bend, Dune Park, East Chicago, Hammond and Chicago's stations.
The main change for 2017 will be adding a weekday train in each direction to the program.
The westbound train arriving at Chicago's Millennium Station at 6:55 a.m., and the eastbound train leaving Millennium at 3:57 p.m. will have cars with bike racks.
