Cuts To Census Funding Concern Some Indiana Lawmakers

Some Indiana lawmakers are concerned a shortage in funding dedicated to census activities could lead to an inaccurate count in 2020.

Census Director John Thompson resigned earlier this year after the agency's funding was slashed, leading some to worry about the future of the 2020 count.

Demographer Matt Kinghorn says an inaccurate count could negatively impact Indiana.

"You can imagine the fights over redistricting here in the state if there are a lot of questions about if this is not a quality census," Kinghorn says.

However, Rep. Phil GiaQuinta, D-Ft. Wayne, says full census funding will likely be secured next year because of bipartisan support for an accurate count.

"It should not be a partisan issue. If it is, I haven't really seen it," GiaQuinta says. "I think it's more just about priority and funding and things like that. And I think that will be overcome in the end as well."

Rep. Michael Aylesworth,R-Lowell, shares a similar sentiment.

"I am very confident that in the end, the money will be there, the people will be hired, and the census will be taken," Aylesworth says.

A new director for the Census Bureau has yet to be named.
