Kokomo city officials will break ground on a new assisted living facility Thursday.
Mayor Greg Goodnight says Vermilion Development of Chicago is building the four-story $23 million project on the former South Side Lumber site.
"It cleans up a blighted piece of property, an under-utilized piece of property and now will be a centerpiece of our downtown revitalization," Goodnight says.
He says the city donated a parcel of land for parking, but most of the interest came from the developer.
Preparation work is already underway and should be complete by fall of 2018.
