Hoosiers visiting the Indianapolis Zoo this week will experience an all-new exhibit flying overhead.
The zoo unveiled the new Magnificent Macaws exhibit over the weekend. Seven species of parrot fly free more than half a mile through the zoo at six specified times each day.
Bird trainer Tim Van Loan says he is proud to see the birds fly freely across the zoo.
"Throughout the last month and a half, they've spent a lot of time exploring the zoo, seeing the different sites, landing on all of the different buildings, seeing all of the different animals they've never seen before," he says.
Van Loan says one third of the world's native macaws are endangered. Zoo staff say they hope the new exhibit will raise awareness of the importance of preserving these species.
