County Commissioners may have found a new site for the proposed Vigo County Jail and Sheriff's Department. The newest location is farmland on the corner of Springhill Drive and Indiana 63 across from the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute.
Vigo County Council member Brendan Kearns says although he doesn't endorse a new jail, he thinks the commissioners are moving in the right direction.
"I'm happy that the county commissioners have made this step, this is something that I consider proactive. I think it's a better decision then what they looked at before with the location along the river," Kearns says.
Vigo County Commissioners withdrew their choice for the new jail site in May at the former International Paper site along the Wabash River. Some city leaders and residents argued that area is designated for commercial and recreational use.
Kearns says the county now needs a good project management system to keep the proposal moving forward.
Officials still need to debate the size of the jail and how to fund the new facility.
