A record-breaking number of Americans will be on the road traveling over the weekend, just as the gas tax in Indiana will go up ten cents starting July 1.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says around 44.2 million Americans are expected to travel for Independence Day, and 85 percent of them will be traveling by car.
INDOT spokesperson Scott Manning says because of the increased traffic, the department has issued a moratorium on most of the construction projects statewide from Friday through Wednesday of next week.
"INDOT's goal is to open up as many of our roadways as possible to make travel as convenient as we can, and reduce congestion as much as we can," Manning says.
