Spencer Pride is abuzz in preparation for the small rural town's eleventh annual pride festival on Saturday.
Spencer has a population of roughly 2,500 people. But Spencer Pride Director Jonathan Balash says it's the small community that makes the organization's mission possible.
"We're out to try to make Indiana a more welcoming place for all people and so we've got to do that one small town at a time," Balash says.
It's been a year since Spencer Pride opened the town's first LGBT center on the courthouse square, selling goods from local artists and acting as a safe space for LGBT members of the community.
The center is completely volunteer-run, but Balash would like to increase the community impact to by expanding business hours to five days a week instead of just three days a week.
The Spencer Pride festival will take place Saturday, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
