Officials Say Voter Turnout Higher Than Expected In Monroe Co. Elections

The caucus will begin at 4:30 p.m. on June 30 at Bloomington City Hall.

Monroe County Elections officials say voter turnout was higher than expected during this week’s municipal elections.

Democrats won both of the contested races on Bloomington City Council for Districts 2 and 3.

Due to the low number of contested races, elections officials staffed only nine polling locations, down from 21 in May’s primary.

Monroe County Elections Supervisor Karen Wheeler says voting went smoothly, with the 9.66 percent voter turnout almost matching that of the primary.

“In the primary we were just barely over 10 percent – I thought we would go much less than that," Wheeler says. "I’m very happy with that.”

Four hundred and fifteen people voted early.

Sue Sgambelluri beat Republican Andrew Guenther in District 2, and Ron Smith topped Independent candidates Nick Kappas and Marty Spechler in District 3.

The councilmember-elects will take office Jan. 1.
