Indiana University Athletics officials say the pilot program to sell beer and wine at this year’s home football games exceeded expectations.
Senior Associate Athletic Director for IU Athletics, Jeremy Gray says the program was successful on multiple fronts.
“We believe that it enhanced the game day experience and it actually made it a safer environment for all attendees. So we do feel that it was a success,” Gray says.
He says beer and wine sales brought in over $470,000, and netted over $200,000, exceeding numbers projected by consulting firm Wasserman.
IU Police say they had a total of 40 incidents during the six homes games this year. That’s a 25 percent decrease over the average of 59 incidents reported in the three years before beer and wine was sold during games.
Gray says 10 percent of the revenue from sales, or just more than $20,000, will help fund substance use prevention programming for students on the IU Bloomington campus.
