Those who would like their holiday mail adorned with the famous Santa Claus, Indiana, postmark before Christmas should send it to the Santa Claus Post Office sometime early this week.
Spencer County Visitors Bureau Executive Director Melissa Arnold says the Santa Claus Post Office is offering the special holiday postmark until Dec. 24, but that those who would like their mail marked in time for Christmas should allow about a week “for everything to get to where it needs to be.”
The Christmas postmark has been a Santa Claus tradition since 1983.
“Each year about 400,000 pieces of mail go through this small-town post office, which is more than the other 11 months combined,” Arnold says.
Students from Heritage Hills High School submit designs as part of an annual contest. This year’s winner was Morgan Vaal.
“It’s a great way to spotlight a local student,” Arnold says. “And to provide extra holiday cheer for people all throughout the country and other countries, who can mail in and receive the postmark.”
A postmark is an official marking that says when a post office received a piece of mail. It also ensures a stamp cannot be reused.
