Monroe County nonprofit Hoosier Hills Food Bank had a busy week.
The agency distributed 2,200 pounds of food to several of its 100 partner agencies Monday. Last week it distributed 155,000 pounds of food to various agencies.
“One of our agencies is Girard Chapel, over in Owen County, they’re staying open tomorrow and today, which they normally wouldn’t do, to make sure everyone has everything they need for the holidays,” says Hoosier Hills Executive Director Julio Alonso.
Alonso says although this Christmas season isn’t much busier than the rest of the year, Hoosier Hills' supply of food has been depleted.
“That’s a little bit worrisome, because we count on the generosity to build up a supply for January and February, going into the winter months when not a lot of people think about us as much,” says Alonso.
Hoosier Hills benefits from leftover food donated by IU Dining Services, Monroe County Community School Corp., and some grocery stores.
The pantry serves Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Brown, Owen and Orange counties.
